In the first half of 2026, China's construction machinery industry delivered an impressive performance. Customs data shows that from January to May, China's construction machinery exports reached $27.902 billion, a year-on-year increase of 20.8%, continuing the high growth trend since 2025. Exports of major products such as excavators, loaders, and graders all increased, with excavator exports reaching 73,295 units in the first half of the year, up 33.5% year-on-year. Against the backdrop of collective price hikes by overseas giants, domestic construction machinery not only kept pace but also achieved both volume and price growth. What is the logic behind this round of high export growth?
I. Sustained Expansion of Overseas Market Demand
The simplest way to gauge market prosperity is to observe whether the industry has collectively raised prices. Since the beginning of this year, international giants such as Komatsu, Caterpillar, and John Deere have repeatedly increased prices. Komatsu raised excavator prices by 7% in February and plans an additional 5% uniform increase in August; Caterpillar has once again raised prices on core overseas equipment since July.
The confidence of overseas giants in raising prices stems from the exceptionally strong demand in North America's infrastructure and mining sectors. Against this backdrop, domestic construction machinery manufacturers have also followed suit with price increases rather than competing with low prices. SANY Heavy Industry raised excavator prices by 5% starting May 2026, with leading companies like XCMG and LiuGong subsequently following suit.
Regional markets are flourishing across multiple fronts. From January to May, China's construction machinery exports to 171 trading partners achieved year-on-year growth, with exports to Africa and Latin America increasing by 43.4%, exports to the EU rising by 31.8%, and exports to countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative accounting for 42.99% of the total.
II. Electrification: The Core Advantage for Overtaking on Curves
The most standout aspect of this export growth is new energy construction machinery. In the first half of the year, exports of electric loaders reached 1,643 units, a year-on-year increase of 172%; exports of electric excavators totaled 135 units, up 60.7% year-on-year.
Taking loaders as an example, domestic sales in the first half of the year amounted to 41,396 units, of which electric loaders accounted for 23,802 units, with a penetration rate exceeding 50%. In June alone, the domestic market penetration rate of electric loaders surpassed 60%, meaning that for every 10 loaders sold, 6 were electric models.
In overseas markets, domestic electric equipment is experiencing a historic window of opportunity. Industry insiders point out that increasingly stringent carbon emission regulations in Europe and the US have opened the door for Chinese electric products to go global. Currently, leading domestic companies have achieved substantial breakthroughs in categories such as electric loaders, excavators, and mining trucks, and are accelerating their climb up the global value chain.
In the excavator category, which has the highest value and the greatest technical barriers, electrification is still in its early stages (with a penetration rate of less than 0.2%), but signs of breakthroughs are emerging. Industry insiders judge that the electrification breakthroughs in loaders and concrete mixers essentially indicate that the three-electric technology has matured, and the inflection point for the volume growth of electric excavators is not far off.
III. From "Selling Products" to "Exporting Solutions"
Behind the high growth in exports lies the overall leap in the capabilities of China's construction machinery industry. Su Zimeng, President of the China Construction Machinery Association, stated that the steady improvement in the quality of domestic complete machinery has driven the simultaneous enhancement of key component supporting capabilities. Some core component manufacturers have continuously refined their technological innovation and product reliability, thereby improving the reliability and durability of complete machinery.
More importantly, domestic construction machinery is transitioning from exporting single products to simultaneously exporting technology, standards, and integrated solutions. The mining sector is a typical example, where Chinese companies have formed a complete product matrix for mining machinery, offering "electric + unmanned" integrated construction solutions to global mining customers.
Leading companies such as Zoomlion, SANY Heavy Industry, and XCMG have recently secured a large number of overseas orders: Zoomlion shipped equipment worth 8.5 billion yuan globally after the Spring Festival; SANY's first SY1250H and XCMG's XE1350, both 100-ton-class mining excavators, were delivered to Europe, opening the door to the high-end European market known for its stringent standards.
IV. Can the Growth Be Sustained?
The physical golden lifespan of construction machinery is approximately 8 years. The last sales peak occurred between 2019 and 2021, and the equipment replacement cycle is approaching.
The sustained prosperity of overseas markets, combined with the release of domestic equipment replacement demand, provides dual support for the growth of construction machinery exports.
At the same time, the logic of industry transformation is undergoing profound changes—simple electrification is no longer sufficient to support long-term development. The deep integration of green and intelligent technologies has become the core driver for developing new productive forces. New technologies such as digital twins, artificial intelligence, and 5G cluster control are accelerating their implementation, and smart mines and unmanned construction sites are entering the stage of large-scale application.
This wave of Chinese construction machinery going global is no longer a simple transfer of production capacity but a comprehensive export from technology to standards and from products to services. This journey has only just begun.
